Katie Heard
Director of Organizational Development

Katie Heard is an artist, educator, and environmental advocate from Des Moines, Iowa. Her passion for the arts began early, participating in art classes and singing in choirs throughout her school years. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in ceramics and photography from Iowa State University.

In 2007, Katie moved to Chicago, where she apprenticed under renowned artist Theaster Gates and taught art at several Chicago Park District locations. She also became the founding Visual Arts Coordinator and Manager at the Gary Comer Youth Center.

Katie expanded her youth development work through The Nature Conservancy’s LEAF (Leaders in Environmental Action for the Future) program, mentoring high school students across the U.S. for five summers. She introduced students to conservation, sustainable practices, and outdoor education.

As Managing Director at Freedom Home Academy, Katie honed her leadership skills and supported organizations dedicated to uplifting the Black community. Now serving as Director of Organizational Development, she continues to combine her expertise in art, education, and environmental stewardship to create impactful programs.
